Four finals in five days. Here is how to build a realistic plan that covers everything without burning out.

Finals week is the most stressful week of the semester, and most students make it worse by having no plan. They open their notes, stare at everything they need to review, feel overwhelmed, and either panic-study the wrong things or give up entirely.

A 7-day study plan eliminates this chaos. It tells you exactly what to study, when to study it, and when to stop. Here is how to build one that actually works.

Day 1: The Planning Day

1

List every final with its date, time, and weight - the exam worth 40% of your grade gets more study time than the one worth 15%.

2

List every topic per exam and rate your confidence 1-5 - this determines how much study time each topic needs.

3

Assign study blocks - fill Days 2-7 with 90-minute study blocks, each assigned to a specific subject and topic. No block should be “study biology” - it should be “review chapters 5-7 using active recall.”

The 7-Day Template

Days 2-3: Weakest Subjects First

Spend the first two study days on the subjects where you are most behind. Your brain is freshest and least stressed at the start of the week.

Days 4-5: Heavy Review

Cover remaining subjects and do a second pass on weak topics from Days 2-3. Use practice tests and active recall.

Day 6: Final Review

Quick review of all subjects. Focus on anything still shaky. Do one complete practice test for your hardest exam.

Day 7: Light Review + Rest

Light review in the morning. Stop studying by early afternoon. Get a full night of sleep. You cannot cram what you did not learn in 6 days.

The non-negotiable rules

Sleep at least 7 hours every night. Take a 15-minute break between study blocks. Eat real food, not just coffee and energy drinks. Your brain cannot consolidate memories without rest.

Ask ChatGPT to build a custom schedule by sharing your exam dates and topic lists. Our Generalist Teacher prompt can then run review sessions for each subject on your plan. See also the best AI exam prep tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have less than 7 days?
Compress the plan. Skip Day 1 (make the plan in 30 minutes instead), combine the weak-subject days, and ruthlessly prioritize. Ask yourself: which exam is worth the most? Which subject am I weakest in? Those get the most time.
Should I study one subject at a time or rotate?
Interleaving (rotating between subjects) is actually more effective for long-term retention. Study Subject A for 90 minutes, take a break, then switch to Subject B. This prevents mental fatigue and helps your brain form stronger connections.
