Finished your homework? Use AI as a second pair of eyes to catch mistakes before your professor does.
You finished the homework. You think it is right. But before you submit, there is a smart way to use AI as a quality check - not to get the answer, but to catch mistakes in your reasoning.
This approach is similar to having a study buddy review your work, except this buddy is available at any hour and never gets tired of reading through your solutions.
How to Check Your Work Without Getting the Answer Handed to You
The Checking Prompt
“I attempted to solve this problem. Here is my work: [paste your solution]. Tell me if my approach and reasoning are correct. If there is an error, tell me which step has the mistake - but do not give me the correct answer. I want to fix it myself.”
This prompt does three important things:
- It forces you to complete the work first
- It gets feedback on your process, not just your answer
- It keeps you in the learning loop by requiring you to fix errors yourself
What Types of Homework This Works For
📊 Math & Science
Show your step-by-step solution and ask “where did I go wrong?” AI is great at spotting arithmetic errors, wrong formula applications, and logic errors in proofs.
📝 Writing Assignments
Paste your draft and ask “Is my argument logically consistent? Are there gaps in my reasoning?” This is different from asking it to rewrite your paper.
💻 Coding Assignments
Paste your code and ask “Does this function do what I think it does? Are there any edge cases I am missing?”
📚 Reading Responses
Share your interpretation and ask “Based on the text, is my analysis well-supported? What am I missing?”
Important distinction
Checking your work with AI after you have completed it is fundamentally different from having AI do the work. The first is quality control. The second is academic dishonesty.
